Criminals and Other Fine Friends

The failed suicide attempt in the sandstorm at Electric Daisy Carnival did not dissuade my resolve to die. Shortly after my return home from Las Vegas, with my body still in the depths of withdrawal, I was invited to party with a drug dealer, Moe, and his friends in Montreal. The idea of being surrounded by violent drug dealers attracted me. My desire to be seen as dangerous persisted in me since I was a teenager, and the reputation I achieved by spending time with Branson only heightened my craving.

We all went to Musique nightclub in downtown Montreal. I was with five other men. We walked past the dozens of people waiting in line and up to the bouncer who unhooked the velvet rope and let us in. The bouncer nodded to me impassively. I nodded back. We walked up a narrow stairway to the inner entrance and were escorted to our bottle service booth. As we walked through the packed club, the distinct rumbling of hip-hop felt like a soundtrack meant just for us. I looked around acting as if I might see someone I knew, while inside I was asking myself why I was here with these guys. I needed to get high fast or panic would set in and I’d have to find a way out of there.

An intimidatingly large, angry looking black man, Gerome, joined us and fist-bumped each of us with hands the size of footballs. I was instantly afraid of him. Moe introduced us and mentioned I was looking to score some Molly and coke. Gerome was the drug dealer’s drug dealer. He sold me some Molly and coke and we stayed to drink and party with his friends. I took the Molly immediately and deliberately in front of Gerome. I wanted to assure him that I was not a cop. I was less discreet than I meant to be. Moe grabbed me and told me not to be so obvious. I apologized while Moe subtly snorted a tiny pile of white powder that sat on his thumbnail.

At the end of the night Gerome joined us all for a quick drink at Moe’s hotel suite. When I walked in, one of Moe’s friends approached me aggressively shoving a small case in my face. It appeared to be some electronics that I didn’t recognize. I shrugged and said I didn’t know what it was, which agitated him more. He was a big guy but everyone in that crew was muscular and covered in tattoos. All of them had a violent edge to them. They were all drug dealers after all. They spent their time lifting weights and selling and doing drugs. Nothing says fear quite like the realization that you are in a room full of coked-out, muscle-headed drug dealers that suspect you are a cop. Finding the small device in the room did not help. Their paranoia grew. Moe stormed over to me. “I fucking trusted you and you bring this shit here? I fucking vouched for you!” I was dumbfounded.
